Animal Opposites by Nicola Killen

Published by Egmont, 2013.

This is a gorgeous board book. It is especially brilliant because of the fold out pages. These pages make the book more interactive and they help add suspense to the story telling because, when folded, the pages hide part of the image. Children can have lots of fun guessing what might be on the full page.

On each page, Nicola Killen also makes great use of onomatopoeic words (whoosh, stomp, flip flap…). It’s like having sound effects as you read aloud and it really helps to bring the story alive.

The illustrations are beautiful and I like the range of animals included in the story. I was particularly pleased to see the penguins as they’re my favourite animals.
