One Moonlit Night is a stunning picture book! It has elaborate pop-up pages that have been intricately engineered to amazing effect.

There are pop-ups on every spread. Some even have built-in movement: waves crashing, wings beating, a dragon flying.

In her dreams, she goes on the most wonderful adventure. First by fishing boat, then on the back of a dragon. They do battle with ogres and trolls, race comets and orbit the moon. It’s a spectacular journey of the imagination set against a moonlit sky.

I particularly loved the beautiful poetic text and the rich, figurative language. It was a pleasure to read and so lovely to have such evocative, complex language in a picture book.

One of my favourite pages is the one set in space with a vast galaxy of planets and stars in the background and a dazzling moon that pops up in the foreground. The little girl has re-purposed her fishing nets and now trawls the sky for stars. It’s such a beautiful image.
